I've never understood why they went with such an abstract design for the Matrix in the movies. Sure, the G1 matrix looked like a glowing geode with handles, but this thing looks more like an art school student's abstract art project than a Cybertronian artifact.

Well, I guess it was caused with the design of the movies. Robots were detailed and I think that's why the Matrix was detailed too. But the look of it... I don't know why they designed it like that  The same we can ask about Meg: why he's a tank (space jet) but not a gun.

In my opinion, they changed too much about the movies. Hell, Starscream alone looks nothing like his G1 counterpart. Aside from the names of the characters and a few minor details, the live action trilogy has almost nothing in common with the original cartoon, making them more like a bad reboot of the franchise rather than a film adaptation of a TV show.

I think, maybe Bay wanted to make the movie suitable for both fans and non-fans. Fans will recognize in the movies the old character, while non-fans will just go and see it just as a random movie
But as for me, before I became a fan, I started with the movie and only then watched G1 and all other series.

Well, I guess that's one way to put it. I would've liked the films to be shorter, focus more on the Transformers themselves, and stick more closely to the source material, though. The fans will be happy and the movies would still make back what they costed by drawing in new fans.

I'm not sure how effective the movies were to draw in kids, though. They seem effective enough from the popularity of toys alone, but I can't imagine the more astute movie-goes like myself seeing Transformers 2 and viewing that as a "jumping on point." I guess the movie going public are more capable of taking the bad with the good than I am.

Oh, I got what you mean! Actually, I think the primary audience was going to be regular people, non-fans. I think Bay wanted to attract everyone. If the movies were completely or mainly based on G1 cartoons, maybe it wouldn't attract other people. But this is my suggestion on what was on Bay's mind.

But certainly the movies aren't for children. Maybe it was done to attract more grow-up people as well? Who knows...

Well, G1 is just a "father" to them all! Maybe that's why you love the original Matrix.
As for me I love G1 Screamer, although I'm more a fan of the movies rather than cartoons.
